Chapter Ten

Everyone is either sitting on the sofa or on the floor when Carter and I walk into the media room. There is a space in the centre of the sofa, so Carter sits and pulls me into his lap. Everyone is looking at me with worry and concern on their faces, making me take a second to appreciate how lucky I am to have people care about me.

“Yesterday, my father—” My voice breaks, making me squeeze Carter’s hand for support. “He told me that he knew something was wrong and begged Gwen to call for help.” I take a deep breath and gather every ounce of strength I have to say what I have to say next. “She laughed and told him he was worth more to her dead than alive, before pushing him

down the stairs.”

“What the fuck?” Jackson jumps up from the floor and starts pacing. “Are you sure?” he asks me, and I try to stop myself from snapping but there is still a bite to my tone.

“Well, no. I can’t be one hundred percent sure because I wasn’t there, I was fucking shopping with you. However, I truly believe that he hung on long enough so that he could tell me what happened and say goodbye.”

This time there is no holding back the tears, which makes Jackson curse again.

“Shit.” He tugs my hand and pulls me off of Carter’s lap before engulfing me in his strong arms. I allow myself a second to enjoy his embrace before pulling away.

“She thinks she is going to be left a fortune.”

“Won’t she?” Callum asks from behind me.

I sit back down so everyone can see me again.

“No. My dad was dirt poor when he met my mother and they fell hopelessly in love. He insisted that my mother needed a prenup. He said he didn’t want anything other than her. When my mother died, she left her life insurance to my father, but every other asset became mine. The house they lived in, the company my father is the…” I break off catching my mistake.

“The company my father was the C.E.O. of is mine too. That actually became mine when Gramps died, but you get the picture. He intended to leave his life insurance to Gwen and Sarah knowing I wouldn’t need it, but he had the policy reverted back into my name which is why he called me yesterday.”

“So, she gets nothing,” Ryder deduces.

“She could contest any money he may have in his personal bank account, but I’m willing to bet he had that moved yesterday too.”

Carter runs his hands up and down my arms. “We need to call the police, baby.”

“I know. I also know that they won’t be able to do a damn thing. There were no witnesses. They will figure he had a heart attack and fell, and the hospital will confirm it.”

“Fuck!” Kane whispers harshly from beside me.

“Yep, that pretty much describes it. Here’s what I want to do. I want you and Jackson to do your P.
